Maternity Reflexology

Maternity Reflexology

Pre-Conception

Reflexology can help to prepare the body physically & psychologically for pregnancy. As well as improving general health, reflexology can release tension in the pelvic area, help to balance the nervous system and regularise hormones in the body. Stress greatly impacts fertility as it can lead to increased levels of a steroid hormone called cortisol in the body. Our hormones are like dominoes. If one is off balance, this will in turn affect the levels of other hormones. Elevated cortisol levels will disrupt reproductive hormones. Reducing stress and regularising hormonal cycles can increase the possibility of conceiving naturally.

Reflexology can also be used alongside and in preparation for assisted fertility treatments such as medicated cycles and IVF.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time when the body goes through many changes affecting hormonal and physiological balance. Reflexology is a natural, safe and effective therapy which can support women through all stages of pregnancy right through to postpartum. It has significant benefits for both the mother and baby. Reflexology can help to balance fluctuating hormones, improve wellbeing, ease stress and anxiety and alleviate many of the common symptoms that may be experienced throughout this journey. Reflexology is a comforting & nurturing therapy which provides a quiet downtime, in often busy lives, when mother and baby can relax and bond.

Studies have shown that regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy can shorten the duration of labour and for many women reduce the level of pain relief required. Many mid-wives in our maternity hospitals now train in reflexology.

Reflexology during pregnancy can help to alleviate some of the common ailments such as:

  • Nausea & morning sickness
  • Indigestion & heartburn
  • Pelvic girdle pain
  • Sciatic & lower back pain
  • Constipation
  • Oedema (swollen feet, ankles or legs)
  • Tiredness & insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Itching
  • Cystitis
  • Symphysis pubis dysfunction
  • Stress & anxiety

Reflexology aims to promote relaxation of the pelvic area thereby creating space for the baby to move around. This may make it easier for a breech lying baby to change position if it is safe for it to do so.

From 37 weeks into pregnancy the focus of the reflexology treatments shifts to preparing the mother for the upcoming birth. At this point weekly treatments are recommended. If a client wishes to attend from 37 weeks it is advised that they have had at least one prior treatment with me during their pregnancy.

Post-natal benefits

This is one of the most beneficial times to have reflexology treatments. Following the birth reflexology can have a rebalancing and restorative effect and so help with the natural healing process of the body. It may help with:

  • Restoring hormone balance
  • Getting the monthly cycle to return to its normal rhythm
  • Improving the flow of milk in breastfeeding
  • Preventing blockages & mastitis by using lymphatic drainage techniques
  • Anxiety & depression
  • Fatigue & low energy levels
  • Digestive problems
  • Back pain
Children Treatment - Lisa May Reflexology

As it may be difficult for a new mother to get the free time to attend an appointment in the weeks after the birth, I am more than happy to offer at-home treatments. I can also show some simple reflexology techniques that parents can use on their babies to help to relax them and improve their digestion.

There are a few contraindications to reflexology during pregnancy however this can be discussed prior to arranging any treatment. If you have any concerns during your pregnancy, it is important to discuss these with your doctor or midwife.

Testimonials

I’m so grateful to have found Lisa’s reflexology treatment service during my second pregnancy. I had never attended a reflexologist before so was unsure what to expect. Lisa created a calm relaxing space each visit, which is exactly what I needed with being pregnant and having a young baby at home also.
Lisa always made me feel at ease and guided me throughout my pregnancy with some pregnancy related issues I had encountered. Lisa went over and beyond to share her wealth of knowledge with me and shared tips to do at home to further enhance my treatments. She’s warm and caring and really takes the time to listen and evaluate concerns and issues to provide the best service she can. I cannot recommend her service enough and I hope to visit her postpartum too. Thank you so much Lisa.

I went to Lisa while pregnant with my little girl. I had never tried reflexology before and had no idea the positive impact it would have! It relieved my symptoms such as swelling, gut issues and asthma and I gave birth to a healthy little baby girl! I’ll be back in the future for sure! Thanks Lisa 💓

I had a number of reflexology sessions with Lisa May and experienced the effects almost immediately, in both my physical and mental health. In addition to the sessions, Lisa offered lots of well-informed strategies that I found very useful. The sessions themselves are very relaxing and Lisa did her utmost to address the areas of health that I was experiencing problems with. I would recommend her highly.

I have regular treatments with Lisa which help immensely with inflammation and muscle aches and pains. I have been treated by a few reflexologists throughout my dancing career and Lisa is by far the best. She is highly knowledgeable and very generous in sharing tips for care after each treatment. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

Lisa is excellent. She is extremely knowledgeable and pays attention to detail. Sessions are thorough and very effective. She is meticulous in her assessment and planning. I would highly recommend her. She is fabulous.

I have had several reflexology sessions with Lisa recently post covid illness over Christmas. I found the treatments helped clear my sinus congestion issues and aided my very disturbed sleep pattern. I slept so well after each session and my nasal congestion cleared very quickly. I also felt very relaxed after treatments and enjoyed this immensely. Lisa is very knowledgeable and professional in her manner at all times and I would highly recommend her as a reflexologist.

I really enjoyed my reflexology sessions with Lisa. She was very knowledgeable and very helpful – I asked loads of questions! I found the sessions very good for destressing and I slept really well afterwards. Lisa came to my house for each session but it’s great to know that I could also go to hers if I can’t get the peace and quiet in my own house. I would really recommend Lisa if you are looking for a reflexologist.
