How will I feel after a treatment?
Reflexology promotes the body’s own healing mechanisms, so some type of response should be expected. Most people experience a sensation of well-being and feel energised, rejuvenated or deeply relaxed. Sometimes however reflexology can bring about a reaction whereby symptoms may temporarily appear worse before they get better. This is transitory and is a cleansing process as the body is trying to re-balance and rid itself of toxins. It should be looked at from a positive perspective as it can be an important turning point in the health of a person. If someone is ill or his/her body is out of balance they will be more likely to experience a healing response after the first reflexology treatment.
Possible symptoms would include:
- A temporary worsening of symptoms such as an increase in pain
- Headaches
- Tiredness
- Needing to sleep a lot/disturbed sleep/dreams
- Increased urination
- Changes in bowel movements
- Feeling emotional/upset/irritable
- Skin reactions such as a rash
- Runny nose/watery eyes/increased mucus
- Increased sweating / feeling cold or hot due to the increased blood flow
- Feeling thirsty
- Nausea/dizziness
In order to reduce these symptoms, I will generally use lighter pressure during the first treatment and avoid any deep prolonged work on sensitive reflexes. For clients who are elderly or have a condition such as fibromyalgia then the first reflexology treatment may be shorter and using gentle pressure. Similarly for children, sessions are shorter and gentle pressure is used.
Drinking plenty of water before and after treatments will help with the elimination of toxins and make you less likely to experience these symptoms. To get the maximum benefit following a reflexology treatment, try to allow for time to rest to give the body a chance to detoxify & heal.
